Death by Arrogance by Bruce E. Dunn5/11/2023 ![]() Classmates recall his keen interest in preserving and playing the Herrick Chapel organ. He had considered a career in medicine even prior to college and followed the teacher’s advice while satisfying his appetite for music by serving as the College organist. He was committed to the College’s core values of excellence in education, diversity, and social responsibility, and with those attributes brought robust and creative perspective to his work as a trustee as well as his connections to his fellow Grinnellians, colleagues, patients, family, and friends.Īs an undergraduate, he was interested in music, history, chemistry, and zoology and he had a variety of extracurricular interests, from playing oboe in the College orchestra to being involved with student government.Ĭraig initially dreamed of becoming a musician, but a music teacher he respected advised him to become a doctor instead. Craig served on the College Board of Trustees from 2000 until he retired from the board in 2016. ![]() 26, 2022, at his home in San Francisco at the age of 81. The black death ziegler5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Mostly though, it is a straight history of the plague, with sources and footnotes and everything. Disease rarely respects human dignity and beauty but the Black Death seemed peculiarly well equipped to degrade and humiliate its victims. ![]() Through almost every account breathes the revulsion as well as the fear which the plague inspired in all who encountered it. It is intended primarily as a history of the time, but by way of illustrating the effect the plague had on the manor system in England at the time, the author includes a short fictional account of what might have happened on one manor during the plague years – sort of a composite of occurrences in several areas. I have sort of a morbid fascination with the plague, both in fictional and non-fictional accounts. ![]() And considering the size of the subject, it isn’t too long. Philip Ziegler’s The Black Death is a pretty comprehensive, although not exhaustive, history of the Bubonic Plague that swept Europe from approximately 1348 to 1350. ![]() Pennypacker author5/11/2023 ![]() With great empathy and humor, Sara Pennypacker tells the story of two very different girls who unexpectedly be each others true family. I didn't mind his British pronunciations of certain words such as pedophile but I email and speak with Brits on a daily basis and often misspell American English now, myself, so it just doesn't bother me in general. I've never come across Buck Schirner as a narrator. Have you listened to any of Buck Schirner’s other performances before? How does this one compare? I liked him from other books and loved reading about his background and what brought him to L.A. I'd restart the Bosch series if I couldn't read new books and then move back through to this one I suppose.ĭefinitely Jack is my favorite character. This lyrical, life-affirming story is about losing and finding home and, most importantly, finding yourself. Other Words for Home is an immigration story, but it is also a coming-of-age story that focuses on finding a sense of belonging, even within one’s own family. ![]() Maybe America, too, is a place where Jude can be seen as she really is. ![]() The American movies that Jude has always loved haven't quite prepared her for starting school in the US-and her new label of "Middle Eastern," an identity she's never known before.īut this life also brings unexpected surprises-there are new friends, a whole new family, and a school musical that Jude might just try out for.
